Unwarranted Intimidation

So, it suddenly occured to me today. I figured out the answer to many-who-know-me's question for why I am involved in accounting. Superficially speaking, they were right to question it. I am not bad at math, but I don't enjoy it. In fact, math still scares me to an extent. So why is it that I enjoy budgeting, balancing, invoicing, and the like?

The answer came to me as I was changing my accomodation reservations at the hotel Kristin and I will be staying for our anniversary. The reservation went to a smaller room with a gas burning fireplace - as opposed to the wood we originally "wood" (hur hur) have had. The other major amenity difference is that the new room has satellite reception on its TV - a feature to which Kristin and I will find a rather high level of utility. The pricing difference was about $100 per night...less. Of course, this means I save $300 on the vacation as a whole. So out came my notebook and I made the adjustments to the trip. When I was done with it, I realized it looked somewhat familiar. In fact, I thought, it looked exactly like some of the statements I concoct for my homework assignments. A sudden thrill struck me. After about another microsecond of reflection, I realized that it is the way I always put such affairs together. I put my recent Florida trip together the same way, and I remember putting similar statements together even in high school when I wanted to show my parents (successfully) that a trip to Egypt with my friend would be economical. Needless to say, I did not go on this trip. Not because my parents said "no", but because my friend wanted to play guitars the whole time we were there. He was in my band and his dad was on assignment from Bechtel in Cairo. I would have had free lodging. I beleive you will all agree that one does not go to Egypt to do what he already does stateside unless there is something to be gained financially. Going to Egypt and seeing nothing would be the worst kind of torture, so I subjected myself not to it. But I digress...

So there you have it. I now know why accounting comes to me easily and why I love it so. Math sucks, but math with purpose rules.

Changing direction here, I would like to direct you to Mr. Bahr's blog at right. If any of you were interested to know what the downtown area of Phoenix was like, he has posted a very nice photographic journal on it. DT Phoenix really is one of the most aesthetically pleasing in the states. The mall in DC is also up there. However, the latter has a lot of government whist the former has a lot of capitalism. I guess Phoenix wins.

For the sake of balance, I would love to direct you to some pro-Obama sites, but none actually discuss hard policy and how it will make the American experience any better. So I won't waste your time. Don't beleive me? Look it up yourself. There is no shortage of it online.
